GAJAH WONG RIVER

According to story where mythologized by the people of the South Yogyakarta, there was an amazing event. Occurrence the Gajah Wong River, that happened when Mataram Kingdom ruled by King Sultan Agung.

Gajah Wong river was a river that located in the middle of the district ‘Kota Gede’. The length of the river wasn’t more than 20 kilometers.

In the seventeenth century, this river was just a little river. Community (people) there called it “kalen”, which means little river. And incidentally the water was just flowing so slightly. One day Sultan called an elephant master.

"The handler, could you tried bath the elephant?".

"... Oh. I would do the will of you, Sultan", answered the handler.

"In the river there, the water was completely clear", the words of the Sultan again.

But that impossible, the river had very little water. It was impossible to bathe the big elephant. The handler thought before went down to the the river. But whatever, the handler couldn’t reject request from the Sultan. And he went down to the river with his elephant. The river water could only  wet the nails of elephant and heel of elephant handler. By all means, the handler couldn’t bath his elephant. The handler started to panic. He began to worry. He was fear if the Sultan got anger with him. He immediately decided to go home, to meet Gusti Sultan. He hoped, Gusti Sultan wouldn’t be upset.

"Please forgave me Gusti Sultan, I was not able to fulfill orders from Gusti Sultan. Punish me Sultan, I couldn’t bath the elephant so clean. Because the river only had handful of river water. And I thought impossible to bath elephant in there ", said the handler with shaking.

"No, I wouldn’t punish you Handlers, before you tried the best. Tried once again, taked the elephant to the river and bathe it. If you patient, I'm sure you would be able to did it well. Go now."

Without denied, the handler immediately went to the river with his elephant. Looking at river that the less water, the handler was get sadless. Then he and his elephant down the river.

 He thought with his brains, how the best way so that elephants could be washed.

"Oh, a river wretched me! The water was not enough to especially for bathe the elephant, "he said, wiped alone the elephant body with the water.

" River stop your water, or you made me wretched. Dried up your water, rather than added my sadness . ", handler said grimly.

 Suddenly a small stream of water was suddenly flooded. Major flooding to hitted the area around the river. The handler couldn’t control the elephant. River water washed away elephant and his handler.

 In the end, Gusti Sultan had heard the news about the floods. Gusti Sultan was surprised hear it. And for a keepsake, times the river was called “Gajah Wong river ", because the river had been washed away and the elephant (handler).

 Till now in the District Pleret Wonokromo village still contained a small hill, which located on the edge of Gajah Wong River, which mythologized citizens, that it was the tomb of a hill and his elephant handler.
